LOST - The Cost of Living
Interesting episode. A bit too religious for me, but then again, I was brought up Catholic, so maybe I am a bit too susceptible to religious untertones. This episode sort of reminded me of Patrick Swayze in Ghost, where you had the "black smoke" demons taking possession of the souls of evil people when they died.
When confronted with his (Eco) life, he felt he did not do anything wrong - in fact, he killed to save his brother's life. But in the jungle, Eco saw the spirits of the people he's butchered and killed.
So, consciously Eco thinks he's done nothing wrong - but subconsciously he knows he's done wrong. Even the little Alter boy asked Eco if he's a bad man.
Catholics like to carry the guilt of sin around them and Eco also had that around his neck. Earlier during the season, Charlie and himself went about building a church - we found out why - but never completed it.
Locke sees white light and Eco seeks black smoke - Good vs Evil, Locke says there's nothing to be afraid of, but Eco knows his fate.
So, metaphorically speaking is the Island purgatory? Is it your last chance to make restitution before your soul is judged?
The other big shocker to me is Juliet and Jack. Juliet tipped her hand as she really doesn't like Ben and she's not alone in that feeling. I think Juliet is playing Jack though like a violin. I just don't trust her. Again there was another religious reference made by Ben. Ben asked Jack if he believed in God, (a strange question by the way to ask a Doctor) and Jack torted back, do you believe in God? Ben said hey I have an tumor on my spinal chord, and a surgeon falls from the sky.
