Grey's Anatomy: Where the Boys Are

I would imagine that it is easier to create a show that fits neatly into either the categories of either comedy or drama. Dramtic TV is usually so darn serious. The stuff never lets up. Comedy on the other hand, while it makes us feel good, never quite feels authentic. Shows that have very funny moments and very serious moments strike a different chord. They have the ability to feel more genuine. After all, real life usually isn't all comedy or all drama, it moves, sometimes seamlessly from one to the other.

This most recent episode of Grey's does a great job of weaving in all of our emotions in a little under an hour. In no small praise, I would say that it reminded me of a classic medical dramedy, M.A.S.H.

The personal interactions on Grey's are awkward to the point of comical. The characters aren't perfect. The situations sometimes seem poorly orchestrated. Sound familiar? It could be real life. But at the same time, while the show takes slices if everyday interaction, with all of its foibles, it tugs at our heartstrings with the death of a near full term baby, and the subsequent delivery of the corpse into the mother's arms.

When you combine that with the absurdity of the two doctors who shared that patient quietly lamenting the pain of sleeping with the same "wrong guy" in the same episode where fights break out between doctors on a 7th grade level (and I'm not even including some of the other silly stuff), you get a show that gives your emotional system a pretty good workout and entertains you all at the same time.

No wonder the show has such a strong following.
